The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The overall objective of the UNEP Economy Division is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
Embedded within the Energy & Climate Branch’s Global Climate Actions Unit, the NDC ACTION Project supports ten partner countries in translating their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) into concrete sector strategies and actions ready for financing and implementation. In this context, the project aims at promoting the acceleration of public and private investment in sector specific NDC implementation. NDC ACTION is based on three core principles: country ownership, balanced focus on adaptation and mitigation, and integration of national development and climate change priorities.
Under the supervision, guidance and mentoring of the supervisor(s), the intern will contribute to the implementation of the NDC ACTION Project, by:
- Supporting the development and revision of inputs for project communication and outreach (print/online formats), such as drafting articles for the project website, revising flyers and presentations, liaising with UNEP’s communication team(s) and regional offices, etc.;
- Supporting the development of meeting minutes, presentations, etc.;
- Supporting the organisation of project events and meetings, e.g., by sending out invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials;
- Contributing to regular project donor reporting, upon request;
- Other ad-hoc support as needed, such as research/analysis on a given topic.

- Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Economics, or other related area of study (preference may be given to master’s candidates);
- Background and demonstrated keen interest in climate change mitigation/adaptation, environmental sustainability, international development, and/or communications;
- Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Teams, Outlook, etc.);
- Experience living in/ working with developing countries (incl. through internships/volunteer service) is highly desirable.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
Applicant must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above).
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The internship is unpaid and will be carried out on a full-time (or 80% part-time) basis, five days per week for a minimum of 4 months / maximum of 6 months.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
